Remote guests without echo: the routing nobody explains
The guest hears themselves, the host hears a delay, the editor gives up. Here is the signal path that fixes it.
Most remote-guest problems are one problem: the guest's voice goes back to the guest. It happens when the call app receives the full studio mix instead of a mix-minus.
Mix-minus in one sentence
Send the guest everything except the guest. Your mixer builds a second mix that includes the hosts and nothing from the call, and that mix feeds the computer running the call.
Where it goes wrong
- The call app is set to the main output, so the guest returns to themselves.
- The host monitors the computer instead of the mixer, and hears a delay.
- The guest records locally but nobody collects the file.
What we install
A mixer with a dedicated mix-minus bus, a labelled USB return, and a one-page checklist taped inside the desk drawer. Guests join on any app; hosts press nothing extra. We also set up a local-recording backup so the episode survives a bad connection.
