Video podcast lighting: two lights, one rule
You do not need a film crew. You need two soft lights placed on purpose and a background that stays out of the way.
Good podcast video is quiet video. The viewer should look at the host, not at the lighting. Two soft LED panels do that; a ring light does not.
The rule
Key light at 45 degrees, slightly above eye level. Fill light on the other side at half the brightness. Nothing pointing at the wall behind the host. That is the whole rule for two hosts facing each other: each host's key light doubles as the other's fill.
Colour temperature
Match the lights to the room. Daylight through a window means 5,000 kelvin; a room with warm lamps means 3,200. Mixing the two makes skin look grey on camera.
The background
Wood slats, a bookshelf, a painted wall with one lamp. Acoustic panels can be part of the picture when they are fabric-wrapped in a colour that belongs in the room.
Cameras
A used mirrorless camera with a clean HDMI output outperforms any webcam. Two of them, one per host, plus a wide, is the standard corporate setup.
