With one host, headphones are simple. With four, the loudest voice sets the level for everyone and the quiet host turns their volume up until it distorts. Per-host mixes fix this.
What a per-host mix is
Each host gets their own headphone output with their own balance: a little more of themselves, a little less of the person who laughs into the mic. The show sounds the same to listeners; only the monitoring changes.
Gear that does it
- Podcast consoles with four headphone outputs and individual mixes.
- Interfaces with a separate headphone amplifier that has per-channel level controls.
- For six or more, a small headphone distribution amp fed from an interface with enough outputs.
The cabling detail
Headphone cables run under the table to a labelled hub at each seat. Nobody reaches across a guest to adjust a knob.
Cost
A four-host desk with individual mixes runs about $900 more in gear than a shared feed. Every one of our multi-host installs includes it, because the alternative is an audible mess.
