Choosing the room: a checklist for offices with more than one option

Small beats big, boring beats glass, and the room next to the kitchen loses. Seven checks before you commit.

When an office offers us three rooms, the best one is rarely the nicest. Run these checks in each.

1. Size

Enough for the table and chairs plus one metre around them. Larger rooms need more treatment, not less.

2. Surfaces

Count glass walls. Each one adds panels or a curtain. Carpet and drop ceilings are your friends.

3. Neighbours

Kitchen, elevator, washroom and printer rooms leak noise through walls and ducts. Walk the corridor with the door closed and listen.

4. Ventilation

Stand under the vent for a minute. If you notice it, the mic will too.

5. Power and network

Two outlets near the table and a wired network port for remote guests. Wi-Fi drops mid-interview.

6. Booking politics

A room that everyone wants for meetings will be taken on recording day. A slightly awkward room that nobody books is the winner.

7. Windows on camera

A window behind the host means silhouettes. A window to the side means free key light.

Send photos of the candidates and we will pick one on the free call. The Blueprint then plans that room in detail.
