Room noise: the HVAC hum, the street and the laptop fan

Reverb is what you hear when you clap. Noise is what you hear when nobody talks. Listeners forgive a little reverb; they turn off a hum.

Measure first

A phone meter reading in the empty room tells us where we start. Under 35 decibels is a good studio. Many offices sit at 45 because of the ventilation.

Fixes, cheapest first

1. Move the laptop out of the room or onto a stand with the fan facing away. Free.
2. Close the vent during recording or add a fabric baffle in front of it. Under $50.
3. Dynamic mics at close distance. They hear the voice and lose the hum. Included in every kit.
4. A heavy curtain over the window facing the street. About $200.
5. A door seal kit and a sweep. About $100 and the most underrated fix.
6. If the HVAC still wins, a small enclosure or a different room. This is where the Blueprint saves you from buying the wrong panels.

What does not help

Foam tiles. They treat reflections, not noise from outside the room.
