A $130 microphone against a $550 one: what changes and what does not
We recorded the same voice in the same room on both. The differences are real, and they are not where most buyers expect.
Two dynamic broadcast microphones, one host, one untreated office, identical processing. Here is what the listening test showed.
What did not change
Noise rejection. Both mics ignored the room at the same short distance. Intelligibility: every word was clear on both. A listener on earbuds could not tell them apart in a blind test.
What changed
The expensive mic handled a loud laugh without harshness, kept its tone when the host moved off-axis, and needed less low-end cleanup. Its arm mount felt like it would outlive the desk.
Who should pay for it
- Shows with many hosts who move around: yes, the forgiveness matters.
- A solo host with good technique: no, spend the difference on treatment or a better arm.
- Video shows: the visual weight of the classic broadcast mic is part of the picture.
Our default
Mid-range dynamic mics on solid arms, and the savings into acoustic treatment. That order of spending produces the biggest audible difference per dollar.
